Collins Barracks was the first purpose-built military barracks in Europe is one of the oldest buildings in Dublin. Now part of the National Museum of Ireland, the project combined extensive internal alterations with a large 3-storey new-build extension, all carried out in a live museum environment.
Restricted access through a historic gateway required tight control of deliveries and site traffic. The level of intervention in the existing Protected Structure required significant temporary works to support the elements above the ground floor. Dry rot was eliminated. Various pieces of military equipment, from a jet fighter to an armoured car, had to be incorporated into the building during construction and protected until works were complete.
