Bus Aras, Dublin’s central bus station, is an iconic listed building designed by Michael Scott in the 1950’s. The project involved the refurbishment of the main Concourse on the ground floor, where up to 10,000 passengers per day access inter-city buses through some 15 boarding gates. As a listed building, interventions had to be carefully controlled and replacement and repair works were subject to rigorous scrutiny. A new ceiling with new lighting and ventilation installation was provided, existing mosaic-clad columns were refurbished and the terrazzo flooring was repaired and renewed. Detailed scheduling of tasks was required to maintain the Concourse as a working passenger terminal, whilst proceeding with the various construction operations behind screened-off areas.
